Our 6 x 30' series Baby Beauty Queens started transmitting from July 27. We're really pleased with the films - they're counterintuitive in that they're not sniffy or sneery about the families involved and they point up the positives for the kids taking part in these contests. The Guardian wrote about the first film: "Sweet and unassuming.....your heart melted." The Radio Times described the series as "oddly uplifting". The series follows on from last year'single 60' film for BBC3 Baby Beauty Queens, which drew big audiences and excellent reviews: "Poignant, hilarious and unsettling" according to the Sunday Times.
Our BBC1 film about selective mutes My Child Won't Speak - about children afflicted with selective mutism - transmitted earlier this year. Reviews were terrific with the Radio Times writing: "Grown men will weep...an engrossing and uplifting film." and the Sunday Times calling it "an excellent documentary: sensitive and rewarding." It brought an audience of 2.4m to its 10.35pm BBC1 slot, comfortably outperforming all other channels. The other good news is that all three families featured in the film saw a big improvement in their child's confidence as a result of taking part.
We have a number of interesting projects in development for BBC1 and BBC3 and we've just agreed a development fund with C4 to come up with Cutting Edge projects.
