We shoot them. We gas them. We poison them. We
set dogs on them. But we'll never beat them: the
Brown Rat remains man's close and persistent
companion. They outnumber us - there's thought to
be 60 million of them at large in Britain - and they
thwart our every effort at control. More than any
other mammal, they inspire horror and revulsion.
